It is Time to Retire the term ‘Human Resources’

Workplace well-being is a popular topic these days. Books, magazines, and conferences all tout the value of promoting workplace well-being and the benefits well-being can produce. I, myself, have been interested in well-being my whole life and have researched and written about various aspects of workplace well-being for over a decade.  

One of my most recent suggestions for promoting thriving employees in flourishing organizations is that we abandon the term “human resources.” 

What is a resource? It is an object. A thing. It is a tool, something to be used, leveraged or exploited to achieve some desirable end. 

Is this how you think of yourself as an employee? An exploitable thing? Is this how you regard the people you work with? As objects to be used? 

If not, then allow me to suggest that you join me in retiring the term “human resources” with its connotations of employees as exploitable objects. Instead of this derogatory term I suggest that we employ the term “human resourcefulness.” 

Resourcefulness is dynamic, affirming, and connotes strength. Whereas “human resources” is a dehumanizing term, “human resourcefulness” is a term that offers a much more positive way to conceptualize what we, in fact, hope to achieve through the HR practices and policies we implement in organizations. That is, we hope to release the potential and resourcefulness of our employees. 

As I discuss in my latest work, we want to expand people’s competencies so that capacity at work is built and enhanced. This “resource unlocking” can initiate a virtuous cycle through which the cultivation of employees’ resources generates other resources, unlocking a pattern of resource intensification. This goes by various names such as gain spirals or ampliative cycles. These virtuous feedback loops produce employees that are more capable, satisfied, and engaged. These employees are not static resources. They are dynamically resourceful. 

The degree to which HR practices and systems generate positive outcomes such as well-being and performance depends partly on whether employees perceive that the organization respects them and is concerned about their welfare. Research shows that when employees think that an organization implements HR practices in order to squeeze more productivity out of them, the practices may have little to no effect. However, when employees believe that HR practices are implemented to enhance their well-being, the practices can have a significant impact on performance, job attitudes, and well-being itself. I refer to this as a climate of human resourcefulness, which is defined as “shared perceptions of the extent to which an organization is motivated to invest in employee well-being”. The terms we use at work can help to convey that we respect our employees, are concerned about their well-being, and can go a long way toward building the right climate. 

“Human resources is an outdated term. People are not objects to be leveraged, but individuals to be celebrated.” 

An important step in creating a positive organization is using terms that reflect that organizations truly value their people. Organizations that genuinely care and respect employees, want to convey that they are interested in employee well-being, and want to build a climate of human resourcefulness, are well advised to consider launching a change initiative to advertise that they are retiring the term “human resources” and replacing it with “human resourcefulness”.

Certificate FAQs

I am a Work Wellness Institute member. When will I receive my certificates?

If you hold a membership with Work Wellness Institute, a certificate of completion will be sent to your email after meeting the requirements of the e-course or webinar.

Please note that a minimum 50-minute attendance is required to be eligible for a certificate of completion.

Who is eligible for certificates?

You are eligible to receive a certificate if you fulfill the following.

  • For live events and facilitated e-courses, you must attend at least 50 minutes including presentation and Q&A, as well as filling in the required fields in the post-survey
  • For self-paced e-courses, you must complete all required components including surveys

Notes:

  • Work Wellness Institute Members receive free unlimited certificates automatically

How quickly can I expect a certificate to be delivered to me upon completion of the webinar? 

After the completion of a course on e-campus, or a live webinar session, you will receive an automated certificate in less than 15 minutes.

I received an email saying that I need to register as a member to obtain a certificate, but I am already a member.

What courses can I take to receive certificates? 

All courses and live events are accredited. Members receive free automated certificates.

How do I know which accrediting organization has pre-approved the course or webinar?

You will see an organization accreditation seal on the course or webinar webpage.

How can I receive an SHRM code?

How do I become a member? 

Visit our membership page for individual and corporate membership information as well as a link to register.

What is the difference between both memberships?

Individual memberships are directly affiliated with the Work Wellness Institute and include voting rights at the Annual General Meeting. The list of individual membership benefits can be found at the top of the membership page.

Corporate memberships are Corporate organizations that have partnered with the Work Wellness Institute to have access to membership benefits for all its employees. This membership includes additional perks beyond the individual membership. Voting rights at the Annual General Meeting are 1 vote per organization.
