Harnessing Talent: Alliance for Recruiting and Retaining Canadians with Disabilities is a three-year project funded by Employment and Social Development Canada with the goal of helping employers keep employees with chronic health conditions and better use the talented pool of people with disabilities who are seeking employment.
The unemployment rate for people with disabilities is more than double that of people without disabilities, despite two-thirds indicating that they are willing and able to work. As the work force ages, with 11 in 25 adults in Canada living with chronic health conditions, organizational policies and practices need to shift to promote extended working lives.
This project will engage employers via human resource professionals, labour representatives and government with the goal of helping employers prepare the workplace for the integration of people with disabilities and to support current employees with chronic health challenges. We will provide practical tools, educational resources, as well as programs and services to help employers apply evidence-informed best practices in disability management.
Activities will focus on provinces and territories represented by participating Chartered Professionals in Human Resources associations with membership in British Columbia, the Yukon Territory, Alberta, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. We expect it to become a national program in the future.
